FASTer - Issue #68

Have you ever wondered why people come to you with their problems. Work, personal, other wise. Human nature? More to do with the Solomon's Paradox:

We're better at solving other people's problems than our own, because detachment yields objectivity.

King Solomon, the third leader of the Jewish Kingdom, is thought of as a sage and a man of great wisdom. People traveled great distances to seek his counsel. But what’s not remembered quite as well is that his personal life was not so pretty. He made bad decisions repeatedly, and neglected to instruct his only son, who went on to ruin the kingdom. Hence the name, Solomon’s Paradox. Plenty of wisdom for others; but not for oneself.

Interestingly Kross et al (2014) found viewing oneself in the 3rd person yields the same detachment, so when trying to help yourself, imagine you're helping a friend. We tend to reason more wisely about other people’s problems than our very own.

Boring Stuff that Scales

Restoration work/refinishing/refurbishing. Every one has a need, no one does it well, no one is qualified to make clients feel comfortable. Every one has a guy who could possibility do it but it's a completely dis organized sector.

Restoration is a broad term I use, it could be from civil work, to house hold goods, to carpets, to cars to a wide spectrum of services.

For the purpose of todays discussion, today we stick to the residential side of restoration, from furniture, to carpets to rooms, turn key restoration given every one doesn't have the time to run after finding disparate service providers. This is a middle to up market service.

Present state of play with regards to water damage but well beyond that, given the environment of high humidity and heat every one at some point in time has a need for a one of these refurbishment services or a bouquet. Imagine if you were able to build this bouquet and offer it year round and people could pick or choose. Think of it as the ability to retain value in things you've invested vs outright replacing them.

Think of an organized handyman service that has a large set of offerings vs the very basic.

As boring a business gets, but even if you had a seasonal offering every monsoon season, or wedding season, this would scale well and bring in great cashflow.

Cant Hurt Me.

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare -- poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America."

In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.

This 40% capability utilization really got me thinking and this book gives you a way to figure out what your remaining 60% could possibly be and how you can unlock it.
