FASTer - Issue #57

I started this Newsletter about 406 days ago. If you get any thing out of this, it should be persistence. It works both ways. Simple example is that of dynastic political parties in our parts, continue to remain and grow due to their persistence. They thrive and flourish, because the common man is not as motivated as them to persistently stand in their way to safeguard their own rights.

Persistence is linked to motivation. If you aren't motivated you cant succeed in any thing. Motivation comes from within. Here is a way to control the result if you are in charge of your own or other peoples outcomes. The best way to understand motivation is by listening to and understanding Fredrick Herzberg's Two Factory Theory of motivation and Job Enrichment. Explained by the man himself in a very atmospheric smoke-filled 1970s lecture theatre.

Figuring out what you're obsessed with is the trick to finding unlimited motivation.Once you find it, your entire life changes.

You have unlimited energy

You see and analyze differently

People are drawn to your work based on your energy

Being addicted to some thing in this context is not a bad thing. Find your addiction to grow your motivation. Politicians are addicted to power, turn the tables and find your value un-locker for growth so you are as focused as them.

Outcomes

The best way to change your outcomes/your companies/startups/firms/business outcomes is to think in Process steps. I am huge fan of process and systems that run on process. Here is a fantastic take from Josh Schultz on designing three big systems when running a larger business. So why am I sharing it now? Because it's a mind set to build for scale. Not every one can build for scale, because most of us lack the experience. This is a fantastic breakdown of how to get it right at the ground floor level.

One New Thing (That I Learnt today)

If you aren't using this to your advantage as you build a business or a new business targeting millennials you are leaving money on the table. The thread here.

Boring stuff that Scales

Reading. A lot of young folks I meet complain they don't read enough. That is perhaps they suffer from the selection dilemma or too much choice, or not knowing where to start. Since Elon is buying twitter, it's only befitting to learn from the maestro him self. Some one asked him on an AMA session on Reddit the following:

"How he's able to learn so fast?"

His response?

"It is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree--make sure you understand the fundamental principles, ie the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details." -Elon

Alex took this concept and applied it to books. The thread below is for every one who thinks books are boring and selecting books is a chose, needs to understand that outcomes scale exponentially when you read books. So make sure you read the incredible thread.

What you should be watching

Michael Oswald's film “Princes of the Yen: Central Banks and the Transformation of the Economy” reveals how Japanese society was transformed to suit the agenda and desire of powerful interest groups, and how citizens were kept entirely in the dark about this. Based on the book of the same title by Professor Richard Werner, a visiting researcher at the Bank of Japan during the 90s crash, during which the stock market dropped by 80% and house prices by up to 84%. The film uncovers the real cause of this extraordinary period in recent Japanese history.

Monetize your time (by learning how to cook)

Want to be happier, healthier, save money? It’s time to get cooking. A study in 160 adults examined whether eating healthy foods prepared at home affects your emotions. Researchers found people who cooked more reported more intense positive feelings and worried less compared to those who had more meals away from home. They were also more likely to then choose healthier foods at their next meal compared to people who ate more food away from home.

It is not only cooking, but sharing meals with others, that is associated with greater feelings of happiness as found in an eight-year follow-up of 39,000 people in a cohort from Thailand.

Results showed adults who had learnt to cook as children or teenagers were significantly more confident, had a greater number of cooking skills and practices and mostly had better overall diet quality and health. Mothers had been the main person who taught them how to cook. Learning to cook from an early age is important. This means the health of the whole family could potentially be improved by helping the main carers to improve their cooking skills.

So this eid break if you do one thing differently, let it be cooking. Get started, it can change your life, literally.

Made in Pakistan (Hope for every one)

Amnah Umair, an Islamabad-based educationist who is running a home-based school since 2013.

With the aim of education for everyone, Amnah Umair is providing free education to street children who can’t afford school fees.

Following the rise of pandemic across Pakistan, the financial conditions of many parents paying for school fees were disturbed which caused more students to drop out of school.

Amnah’s home-based School welcomed those students and provided them an opportunity to resume their education.

One Last thing

The power of prayer. We are limited by what we think we can ask for. Heres a look to rewire our selves and our thinking, with no restrictions or limitations. In the end our outcomes can be as grand as our ability to ask. A fantastic thread.
